Connecting to Art and Language Through Sikh Canadian Stories

The Sikh National Archives of Canada is hosting exhibitions and events in collaboration the Sikh Heritage Month Foundation and the Brampton Public Library to celebrate the month of April as  Sikh Heritage Month, which was first recognized in Canada in 2013. The aim of this month-long celebration is to recognize and promote the rich history, culture, and contributions of Sikhs in Canada.

The exhibitions will be open to the public from April 16th to 23rd, 2023. The Brampton Library Springdale Branch and the Gore Meadows Community Centre & Library will be the venues for the exhibitions. The timings for the exhibitions are from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday to Thursday, and from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.

The exhibitions will showcase the vibrant history and culture of Sikhs in Canada, featuring artwork, artifacts, photographs, and documents from the Sikh National Archives of Canada’s extensive collection. The displays will highlight the significant contributions of Sikhs to Canada’s social, cultural, and political landscape.

In addition to the exhibitions, there will be two events held on April 23rd, 2023, at the Brampton Library Springdale Branch. The first event is the Art Hive – a free drop-in community art studio that will run from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The second event is an Illustration workshop with Keerat Kaur, a Canadian-born artist and architect with Sikh-Punjabi roots. The workshop will run from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm and requires registration.

Keerat Kaur’s work takes shape through the disciplines of painting, sculpture, writing, music, and architecture. Her aesthetic lies in the realm of the surreal, merging mundane and dream-like qualities. Attendees of her illustration workshop will have the opportunity to learn from a talented and accomplished artist with a unique perspective and style.

The Sikh National Archives of Canada invites everyone to join them for these exhibitions and events celebrating Sikh Heritage Month. The aim is to showcase the rich history and culture of Sikhs in Canada and to provide a space for people of all backgrounds to come together and learn about this important part of our society. Whether you are a long-time resident of Brampton or a visitor to the area, the exhibitions and events promise to be an engaging and informative experience.
